Based on the DreamWorks Animation hit, How to Train Your Dragon the Musical JR. brings fire-breathing action, epic adventure and big laughs to the stage. Hiccup is a young Viking who defies tradition and befriends one of his deadliest foes – a ferocious dragon he calls Toothless. Together, the unlikely heroes fight against the odds to save both their worlds in this wonderful theatrical adaptation.
Rehearsal Schedule:
All rehearsals and performances will be held at our new Eugene location: 2101 Bailey Hill Road (between Fitness 1440 and ATOS NW Jiu Jitsu)
Rehearsals begin Tuesday, September 15
Tuesday/Thursday 6:30-8:30pm
Friday 5:00-9:00pm Note: Most cast members will not regularly be called for four hours on Friday evenings. Most Friday rehearsals will be a series of small group calls for blocking specific scenes with specific characters.
Sunday November 22 1:30-6:00pm
No rehearsal: Thursday-Friday, November 26-27
Not all cast members will be called for every rehearsal. On any given rehearsal day, cast members may be called for the full rehearsal call, a portion of the day’s schedule, or none of the day’s scheduled rehearsal - depending on what songs or scenes we will be working on that day. In general, Tuesdays will be choreography rehearsals, Thursdays will be vocal rehearsals, Fridays will be blocking rehearsals, and our Sunday rehearsal can include a little bit of everything.
Finalized rehearsal schedules will be posted two days in advance.
Rehearsal Schedule Conflicts:
The following dates are required for participation in How to Train Your Dragon JR and conflicts will not be accepted:
Sunday, 11/22 1:30-6:00 Rehearsal (Full run-through rehearsal)
Tuesday, 11/24 6:30-9:00 Rehearsal (Full run-through rehearsal)
Monday-Thursday, 11/30-12/3 Tech week rehearsals
Friday-Sunday 12/4-12/5 and 12/11-12/13 Performances
If your cast member has a conflict with any of those dates, they aren’t eligible to participate in this production.
Cast families must respond to the rehearsal conflict survey before casting and declare any conflicts with the published rehearsal schedule. Cast members may have a limited number of pre-approved rehearsal conflicts and still have a successful experience if those conflicts are submitted before casting.

How to Train Your Dragon the Musical JR - Performances
No conflicts accepted - cast members must be available for all performances
How to Train Your Dragon the Musical JR will be double-cast. This means that most roles will be played by two different actors. For example, one actor will play Astrid in the Hiccup Cast and a different actor will play Astrid in the Toothless cast. In the opposite cast those actors will play roles in the ensemble. All cast members will perform in both casts but they may play different roles in the Hiccup Cast vs. the Toothless Cast.

Call times for performances are typically 1.5 hours before the show begins. Note: When we return for our second Friday performance we will call actors 2.5 hours before the show begins so we have time to review - in lieu of a pick-up rehearsal.
Parent Volunteer Hours:
Principal cast families are required to volunteer at least 8 hours for this production or to buyout the required volunteer hours at $20 per hour. Volunteer opportunities include helping make costumes, set painting, set building, costume or prop shopping, providing supervision at dress rehearsals and performances, ushering, selling concessions, etc. All volunteer hours must be submitted within one week of the show’s closing date. If required hours are not met or hours are not submitted by the deadline, a charge of $25 per unfulfilled hour will be billed to your account. Per our new board policy, future registrations will not be allowed with a balance still remaining on your account.
Costume Fittings:
Cast families will need to sign up for a costume fitting appointment on Saturday, October 3. If a cast member needs a second fitting, it will be scheduled during rehearsal time. Re-scheduling individual actor fittings is difficult, and must align with the costumer's limited availability. Please prioritize attending costume fittings on their originally scheduled date (October 3) if at all possible. A link to sign up for costume fittings will be included with the audition information in your enrollment confirmation email.

AUDITIONS FOR How to Train Your Dragon the Musical JR
Auditions consist of TWO PARTS on two separate days.
Audition requirements are based on your student’s status of NEW vs. RETURNING and whether they would like to be considered for a specific role.
There are two parts to our audition process - INDIVIDUAL auditions and GROUP auditions.
INDIVIDUAL AUDITIONS - Individual auditions include an acting audition and a vocal audition. Individual auditions will be held, by appointment, on August 27, September 1, and September 2.
Does everyone need to prepare an individual audition?
All returning students who have previously participated in the principal cast of a UCYT production are required to submit an individual audition.
Students who are new to UCYT or have only participated in one of our Squad or Crew casts (not principal cast) are not required to submit an individual audition UNLESS they would like to be considered for a specific role.
Any student who would like to be considered for a specific role (principal or supporting role), must prepare an individual audition, whether they are a new or returning principal cast member.
If cast members aren’t able to attend in-person, individual auditions, they may sign up for a video audition. Video auditions are due by Wednesday, September 2nd at 10pm.
ACTING AUDITION:
Students should prepare 2 sides for their individual audition. What are sides? Sides are an excerpt of a script that an actor is expected to perform at an audition. This excerpt could be an entire scene, or just part of one. All sides for How to Train Your Dragon the Musical JR auditions will be provided by UCYT after registration on BAND. If you are auditioning for a specific character, you should be reading for that character in at least 1 of your 2 sides.
Prepare the lines for one character in each of your two sides. Staff members will read for the other characters in the side at your audition.
Important: If at all possible, cast members should memorize their sides.
VOCAL AUDITION:
Prepare the song listed for the character you’d like to audition for. If there isn’t a song listed for the character you want to audition for, then you should prepare the song listed for “any other character.”

Cast members must use the music tracks we provide for you, which will be accessible to you on BAND after registration. In the ATTACHMENTS section on BAND are folders with vocal tracks, accompaniment tracks, and sheet music. Use the vocal versions along with the sheet music to learn your audition song and the lyrics. Once you are familiar with the song, stop using the vocal tracks and switch to the accompaniment tracks (these are like karaoke tracks, with no vocals). The accompaniment tracks will be what you sing with during your audition.
If at all possible, cast members should memorize the lyrics for the song they have chosen.
Do not use any other music other than what we have provided for your audition.
GROUP AUDITIONS
Group auditions will be held Thursday, September 3rd from 5:30-9:00. All cast members should attend group auditions. We will get to know each other, learn a short segment of the show choreography together, and participate in cold reads. Bring a snack and a water bottle, wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can move in, and be prepared to have fun!

Students may audition for roles of any gender.
Hiccup
Son of Viking chief Stoick, wants to be a fierce Viking like his father, but he simply… isn’t. What Hiccup lacks in physical strength and fighting skills, he makes up for in brainpower and problem-solving skills. Hiccup is sincere and always wants to do the right thing, even when it’s hard or goes against the grain. Character Gender: male
Astrid
Everything a Viking recruit should be: strong, fast, and tough. She idolizes Stoick and wants to hunt Dragons, perfecting every part of her training. Astrid is confident and charismatic but not arrogant, and she takes training very seriously. Character Gender: female
Toothless
A Night Fury, the most mysterious of all Dragon species. Though Toothless is unsure at first about working with Hiccup, they become fast friends.
Stoick
The Viking chief and main dragon slayer. Though he may come across as harsh, he’s only hard on Hiccup because he wants to keep him safe. He knows the more well-trained his recruits are, the safer the whole village will be. Character Gender: male
Gobber
The village blacksmith and helps train the Recruits. While he’s a little bit goofy, he knows how to deal with Dragons and is an excellent teacher. Character Gender: male

Controls all the other Dragons
Ruffnut
Ruffnut and Tuffnut are twins. They talk tough and want to be dragon slayers, but they are not quite as capable as Astrid and tend to argue with each other. Character Gender: female
Snotlout
A bit of a loudmouth. He’s not necessarily mean; he’s just competitive and wants to impress everyone. Cast an actor who can command the stage and lean into Snotlout’s obnoxious streak. Character Gender: male
Tuffnut
Ruffnut and Tuffnut are twins. They talk tough and want to be dragon slayers, but they are not quite as capable as Astrid and tend to argue with each other. Character Gender: male
Fishlegs
He's doing his best. Like Hiccup, he’s not the most naturally gifted Viking, but he tries. Character Gender: male
Recruits
Dane, Frostbite, Lumi, Brita, Sungrass, and Tig are the other recruits.
Phlegma
Phlegma, Hoarck, and Gertrud are Adult Vikings with a few lines and small solos.

Gronckles
Gronckles have six fire blasts before their power is depleted. Husky, Musky, and Lusky are used by Gobber to train the Recruits. Musky is defeated by Astrid during training while Husky and Lusky spar with the Recruits.
Zipplebacks
Two-headed Dragons considered dangerous by the Vikings. Farley and Charley have a few short solos and spoken lines.
Timerjacks
Described as large with small wings. Tuna, Luna, and Bruna sing solos and have featured moments.
Thunderdrums
Reclusive, living in underwater caves and tide pools. BELLY and JELLY have lines and sing solos.
Skrills
Described as fast and agile. Lash and Dash sing solos and have featured moments.
Scauldrons
Live in tide pools and ponds and breathe scalding-hot water. Sparky and Marky have significant solos and individual lines.
Changewings
They spit acid. Tuck and Huck sing solos and have a few featured lines.
Deadly Nadders
Have sharp spines. Blitz is a bit of a nervous Dragon.
